Hi my name is
Marcus Mason-Williams.
I am enthusiastic, hard-working and have a passion for wildlife and nature. I have autism and am proud of it. I have had my share of ups and downs but believe in keeping going no matter how tough.
I have a lot to contribute and want to be the best I can be. Art and performing sets me free and art, my stories and my performances help me to communicate. I connect with others especially the young and the old.
I am excited to have set up my new business and want to thank the Special Olympics GB, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, Citypress, Autism’s Got Talent, Born Anxious, Big Clothing 4U, LoveArtPix, Neil Kerber and The Wildlife Trusts for the help they have given me so far…
…and as soon as I complete my animation training I am going to make a film or two!
My interests
Music / performing
For me music is a way to see the bright side of life. My musical inspirations are Bryan Adams and Elton John. I have enjoyed performing since school days and took the lead role in Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre, while studying at the Glasshouse College. I am a proud member of Birmingham Rock School, where I have singing lessons and perform in several gigs a year. Together with 2 friends, who also have autism and a passion for music, I have set up a band called Bright Light.
In 2018 and 2023, I was fortunate to be selected to perform in Autism Got Talent. I performed my first song, “I feel like a Warrior”, at the 2023 event in Stockton. The song shows the positive side of having autism and encourages people to make the most of their talents.
Working outside and glass cutting
Before starting my own business I was trained by Kevin Barry Adams (a master craftsmen at the Ruskin Mill Glass Centre at Glasshouse College) to hand-cut crystal glass. Kevin nicknamed me “Iceman” after the pattern I most enjoyed cutting. I like working outside, as it gives me fresh air and exercise and helps me find peace in nature. My love for the natural world came from my heroes: Sir David Attenborough, Bill Oddie, Chris Packham and Johnny Kingdom. I now work on the Nature Reserve and with the animals at Wildgoose Rural Training twice a week. I like working with my hands and at my own pace. I feel fortunate that everyone I have worked with has been caring and has not put me under pressure.
Drawing
I started drawing when I was about five. Henry Rousseau’s animal paintings, especially Tiger in a Tropical Storm, inspired me to learn to draw animals. I now mainly draw, paint and animate using digital software, but still enjoy hand drawing, especially comic strips. I am focussing on developing my animation and cartoon drawing skills and have greatly appreciated Neil Kerber’s support and encouragement on my cartoons.
Riding
I have been riding for a number of years now. I used to be scared of horses because of their high pitched whinnying. A brilliant riding instructor, now a close friend, helped me and showed me that horses give you a sense of freedom. I am now calm with them and see their gentle side and that horses can be “man’s best friend”. My riding highlights have been galloping on the beach in South Wales and hacking in the Wyre Forest with my riding teacher.
Sports
I am a member of the Special Olympics of GB West Midlands Ski Group and love our trips to Pila in Italy and. I also like running and enjoy Tai Chi for relaxation.
